Day 6 – Nine Months Later

“Time passes and the one constant throughout has been that change is inevitable.” – S.R.Gann: The Colour of Magic
I am pleased to report that I’ve managed to keep Frank happy, though at times I’m certain he’s felt neglected. Creating a world and describing what resides in said world is a test to one’s perseverance and dedication. Determining what story to tell is even more difficult. But then again, that is the job, challenge and delight of a fantasy novelist.
In August of 2013, I talked about “Building a World” as if it were easy. Day 4 I started and Day 5 I wrote, “I have built a world.” How wrong I was.
The reality is that I only caught a glimpse. Yet it was a place to start, and since that day my vision of the place has grown more vivid – like early morning darkness fading to gray, then finally revealing color and life – the story unfolding before my eyes.
It’s been an interesting process. Every time I’ve advanced the story, I’ve also delved into the past – trying to discern the reasoning behind what I am witnessing, what I have written and why. This, in turn, uncovers more of the world I had not previously seen. I see myself as a scribe who is using his book as a portal into another world, so others can experience what I do.
I have not created a world. One cannot create that which already exists. Instead, I am revealing it to others through the medium of writing – building a portal through the pages of a book.
It’s close to completion and soon, we’ll see if it works well enough for others to desire a trip through it’s mystical gates. That’s my goal.
Cheers!
